Chana Masala: Chickpea Curry

What is chana masala?

Chana masala is an Indian curry made of chickpeas in a spicy tomato-onion sauce flavored with spices. The chickpeas are first cooked until tender and later added to the sauce before simmering down and infusing all of the flavors. It’s warm, hearty, and goes perfectly with jeera rice, naan, or roti!

Chana Masala: Chickpea Curry
Prep Time: 20 mins
Cook Time: 30 mins
Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp cooking oil
  • 2 cups cooked chickpeas
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 800 g canned diced tomato
  • 1 green chili pepper, minced
  • 4 garlic cloves, grated
  • 1 tbsp ginger, grated
  • 2 tsp garam masala
  • 2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • water if needed
  • salt, to taste
  • cilantro and lemon wedge, to garnish

Directions

  1. Heat oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add onions and green chili and sauté until onions turn translucent, for 3-5 minutes.
  2. Add garlic and ginger. Continue cooking until fragrant for 1-2 minutes before adding garam masala, cumin, turmeric, and coriander. Stir for 30 seconds before adding diced tomato and chili powder.
  3. Add cooked chickpeas and bring mixture to a simmer. Season with salt to taste, stir, and let cook for 10-15 minutes to develop flavors. If you prefer a runnier sauce, add water as desired.
  4. Remove from heat and serve with cilantro and lemon over basmati rice, naan, or starch of choice.
